Get to know Jessica—this interview was taken from New Mexico Combat Sports website

What is your background and how did you get into Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai?
I was very athletic in H.S. I was of all things a cheerleader (ha ha), I was on the track team, swimming team and played soccer in middle school. Growing up I always wanted to be involved in martial arts. I started off by wanting to join Karate but it was to expensive. Then in middle school I happened to be hanging out right where a fight broke out an noticed a boy kicking some guys head off… I was thinking to myself “Dang, I wanna do that”…( I know, I know, not something a 12 year old girl should be thinking). So, I later asked him how he was doin’ all that stuff and he said he was a kickboxer…I was very interested however we still didn’t have the means to do such a hobby. I ended up being quite the fighter in H.S. (no training needed)…I guess that’s what happens when you grow up in the South Valley which I wouldn’t trade for the world. As time had passed (relationships, children) and I had grown up, it seemed as though my martial arts dream was a distant one. Then a major blow to my life. My mother best friend and only parent there for me growing up, passes away in my arms of breast cancer. I took the pity me, party, drink my sorrows away road for a while which took a toll on me quickly. Somewhere in all of that I found myself in a conversation with one of my male friends. He was talking about this gym he fights out of and how funny it is over there because there is no female fighters just female wanna bees. Quickly, I thought, “that’s it, that’s what I need…a positive outlet for my aggression.” I went on to ask him some questions and all I remember him saying is…”you can’t go there, it’s for fighters only…”It was a personal mission to prove him wrong, keep myself out of trouble and get in shape. From then on my amateur career included boxing and kickboxing matches! Showed him!

You have a “Full Muay Thai Rules” Fight coming up on Nov.22nd can you explain to everyone what “Full Muay Thai Rules” is?
Muay Thai is said to be considered one of the most dangerous fighting styles out there. Unlike boxing where it is hands only and kickboxing which involves hands and kicks, Muay Thai consists of hands, shins, elbows and knees.

On Nov. 22nd, if you come out on top in your fight you will become the “1st female Muay Thai World Champion in New Mexico.” How do you feel about that statement and will that be added pressure on you?

That is a very powerful statement! I am gracious to have the opportunity to make history. Not just for myself, or my family but for all the females that have brought home world titles to NM. It is an honor. There is a slight feeling of pressure but it’s all gone when you step in that ring.

When you’re in the ring, what goes on in your mind?
I hope my hair doesn’t fall out of my hair tie. – kidding!
Let’s see, how can I explain it? It’s pretty much a dark place for me. I’m going for the kill (not literally) but, I am in a state of mind that is mean and reckless. You can die in that ring. I don’t take it lightly one bit.

Is there anything you would like to say to your Fans, Family, Friends and is there any sponsor shout outs that you would like to send out?

NM Combat Sports, thank you for all the publicity you rock! My fans, I hope to win your heart. My two beautiful boys…who admire and look up to me so much, I wish to make you proud. To my crazy family who almost always gets kicked out of every show for being to loud, love you. My teammates who feel soooo sorry for me because I get it the worst in class. My mommy…the only damn person who believed in me growing up, I know you are watching over me and causing a scene in heaven every time you watch me fight. And, to my number one fan my fiancée, my trainer, my life. Who spends countless hours yelling at me, breaking me down, punishing my body and making me cry in the gym. Who always tells me there is no crying in this sport and reminds me that I could have picked water polo! The one who has stripped every bit of girlyness out of me when I’m in the ring and has perfected giving me the best body shot ever, ugh! Fernando Calleros or as he would prefer to be called…Master Fern…lol I love you.
